Echoes

No-one showed us to the land
And no-one knows the wheres and whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

(Pink Floyd - Echoes)

Hamburg's new Elbphilharmonie concert hall under construction. An estimated cost of more than 500 million Euros means it's already been six times as expensive as the Sydney Opera House - and it won't open before 2012.
500 seconds; F/22; ISO 50.

Most of the giant Port of Hamburg is situated along the south bank of the river Elbe. It's the source of the yellowish light, which in turn is the reason why Hamburg's nights are starless. Most of the container terminals and shipyards are in operation 24/7. My favourite part of Hamburg's harbour is the Speicherstadt on the north bank though.

My English teacher Mrs. Avenell loved the quote "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." Still, I love statistics. And facts. Hamburg has more than 2,500 bridges - that's more than Amsterdam, London, and Venice combined, making it the city with the most bridges in the world.

Goodnight, and have a nice weekend!

Hi Dom! Yes, that's me, I hope I am back for a bit longer this time.

I like your pictures very much. I haven't been to Hamburg yet, but visited my sister in Munich this summer and I think it is a nice city, especially I loved Alte and Neue Pinakothek.

Have a nice Sunday :-)

Thanks a lot, Ian!
Yeah, it happens sometimes... thanks to the internet though, there's many ways to rediscover songs we used to love but forgot about :-)

city with the most bridges in the entire world? damn, that's pretty amazing. gold medals to it!

and is it just me or does it seem to take way longer to build things over there than it needs to....???? that seems like a LOOOONG time for something to be set for completion. people here complain when they have to look at something being built longer than 6 months lol.

gorgeous pictures as always :) i need to visit Germany.

I love facts and statistics and useless knowledge! :-) I'm a bit of a Wikipedia - geek! :-)

Yeah, but usually it lasts longer. Over there, most houses wouldn't survive a huge storm.

Thanks so much Brooke... yeah, you do need to come over.
