Germany. July 2011.
I've had a stressful week at work, but it's been a lot of fun. I'm not allowed to say much about the excavation. There's not much to talk about anyway. We didn't find many things... just a few broken pieces of pottery and traces of charcoal. We start working at seven o'clock in the morning; finishing time is half past three. Since we're staying in a village in the middle of nowhere, there's absolutely nothing to do.
Blog post title taken from the song by Jimmy Walker from the Vanishing Point - soundtrack.

You might find a treasure, who knows...they are often found in the middle of nowhere...:D
That's the dream of every archaeologist... and a dream come true for only a lucky few.
On the other hand, archaeology is not about finding treasures, it's about finding out more about the people who lived in a certain place long before present. So whatever we find - even if we don't find anything - eventually, we'll know more about the past: If people lived in that place or if they didn't... if there are any graves or hoards... and a whole lot more.
The shop photo is something I can picture during WWII for some reason. I think that might be the nicest shot of a tractor I've seen :)
Thanks very much! The shop did indeed remind me of some scenes from "Band Of Brothers" - those episodes in which the soldiers are passing through devastated villages - that show has been very inspiring.
It's not a tractor though, it's an excavator... :-)
