Ripple

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

(Grateful Dead - Ripple)

There's a land beyond the river
That we call the sweet forever

and 2011, respectively.

A digital photograph and another
picture taken on 35mm film, 2012.

It was not so long ago that I thought that my dog, Ringo, would be around for a few more years to come, and hoped that he would pass away, peacefully, in his sleep… not leaving me with the choice to make that I had to make now - twelve years, one month, and fifteen days after Ringo was born…

In bold defiance of the many hot summers and cold winters that had passed in his lifetime, Ringo remained young at heart to the very end and continued to bring joy to my life… the youthful desires of his mind at times exceeding the physical realities of his age… running through the fields, chasing his green rubber ball, carrying his cuddly toys around the garden as if they were his own puppies…

On a routine check-up half a year ago, the vet diagnosed Ringo with a tumour, which, by the time it was discovered, had grown too big inside his nose to remove. Despite the fact that with every week that passed by, he’d breathe harder, he never gave up on being alive, right until that sad day when he was too weak to get up, which was when I had to have him put down and looked into his eyes for one last time.

It’s on occasions like this that sometimes I wish I could just believe in the hereafter, like so many other people do… a world beyond this one, a place where he’d be allowed to forever run through fields and jump across creeks and chase that rubber ball… free of all our earthly bonds, forever young and wild at heart. But I can’t…

Nevertheless, his memory will always remain… his dark brown eyes, his fur, the way he’d always reach out for me with one paw when I’d sit close to him. Time heals all wounds, so they say… but I’ll be working on this one for a long time.

And when your sorrow is comforted
(time soothes all sorrows)
you will be content that you have known me.
You will always be my friend.

(Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)

I will miss you forever, my dear friend, and I will think of you – every day – for the rest of my life.

Crazy Love

I can hear her heart beat from a thousand miles
And the heavens open every time she smiles
And when I come to her that's where I belong
Yet I'm running to her like a river's song

She's got a fine sense of humour when I'm feeling low down
And when I come to her when the sun goes down
Take away my trouble, take away my grief
Take away my heartache, in the night like a thief

(Van Morrison - Crazy Love)

My friend from Teddington, Oliver, is coming to Hamburg next Tuesday, for half a year of work experience. He'll be staying at my place and I'm looking forward to having a few beers soon. On Friday, we'll meet up with some of my girl friends - one of whom will leave Hamburg on Sunday to spend a year as an au pair in Putney. What are the odds?

Tonight's match Germany vs. Greece was awesome. Now I'm looking forward to England vs. Italy on Sunday, and hopefully England vs. Germany in the semi-final.

Goodnight.

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Comfortably Numb

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move
But I can't hear what you're saying

When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like
Two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand

This is not how I am
I... have become... comfortably numb

(Roger Waters & Van Morrison - Comfortably Numb

One of the reasons why Berlin fascinates me like few other cities is that there's so much history and art wherever you go... You should visit this website if you're planning a trip.

Click here to listen to what I consider to be a perfect version of "Comfortably Numb"...

Have a great day.

One more picture before I leave the house... Unfortunately, I didn't get to take any long exposures at all during the three days I spent in Germany's capital... I'm planning to spend a whole night taking pictures the next time I visit Berlin.

Blog post title taken from this famous song which can also be heard at the end of Schindler's List. If you'd like to listen to some contemporary Hebrew music, click the following links: #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5. This next song, entitled "Yalla Yalla", isn't really a Hebrew song, but the singer is Israeli, and she's too beautiful not to share this clip. Enjoy.

I don't understand much Hebrew, but I do enjoy listening to beautiful music regardless of the language. Last year, I took part in Hebrew and Swedish language courses, but I was too busy studying and working to remember much of what I learnt. I would still like to visit both countries, however - Sweden during winter when the aurora borealis is visible, and Israel during a time of peace in that troubled region.

Shalom.

Roll Me Away

Took a look down a westbound road
Right away I made my choice
Headed out to my big two-wheeler
I was tired of my own voice
Took a bead on the northern plains
And just rolled that power on

Stood alone on a mountain top
Starin' out at the great divide
I could go east, I could go west
It was all up to me to decide
Just then I saw a young hawk flyin'
And my soul began to rise
And pretty soon
My heart was singin'

Roll, roll me away
I'm gonna roll me away tonight
Gotta keep rollin', gotta keep ridin'
Keep searchin' till I find what's right

(Bob Seger - Roll Me Away)

I'm leaving in a few minutes to watch tonight's football match... so far, Euro 2012 hasn't been as exciting as the 2010 World Cup though.

Enjoy your evening, and have a nice weekend.

Night Moves

Pictures taken in Herford and Paderborn, respectively.
June 2012.

Wandering around Herford and Paderborn, I couldn't help but notice that both cities seem to have spent a lot of money on the preservation of historic buildings in recent years.

Blog post title taken from the song by Bob Seger - this song came to my mind earlier today when my boss told me that she thinks I flirt too much... but then again, it's summertime and I work at a coffee shop, so what am I supposed to do?

Have A Little Faith In Me

When the road gets dark
And you can no longer see
Just let my love throw a spark
And have a little faith in me

And when your back's against the wall
Just turn around and you will see
I'll be there, I'll be there to catch your fall
So have a little faith in me

I will hold you up
I'm gonna hold you up
Because your love, it gives me strength enough
So have a little faith in me

Paderborn Cathedral, Paderborn, Germany.
June 2012.

If you've seen the perfection that is Chartres Cathedral, Paderborn Cathedral won't blow you away, but it's a beautiful building nonetheless.
The "Dreihasenfenster" ("Window of Three Hares" is a very interesting work of art and one of the town's landmarks. The motif of the three hares also appears in many other sacred sites throughout Europe and the Middle and Far East.

Goodnight.

Be Thou My Vision

Be thou my vision oh Lord of my heart
None other is aught but the King of the seven heavens

Be thou my meditation by day and night
May it be thou that I behold even in my sleep

Be thou my battle-shield, be thou my sword
Be thou my dignity, be thou my delight

They love in my soul and in my heart
Grant this to me, oh King of the seven heavens

Tupelo Honey

You can take all the tea in China
Put it in a big brown bag for me
Sail right round the seven oceans
Drop it straight into the deep blue sea

She's as sweet as Tupelo Honey
She's an angel of the first degree
She's as sweet as Tupelo Honey
Just like honey from the bee

There's a rose pressed inside a Bible
That she reads on the balcony
She's sweet in slumber and I've got her number
For the beginning of the century

(Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey)

Julia, who hosted me in Paderborn, Germany.
June 2012.

Van Morrison's masterpiece "Tupelo Honey" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and along with Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road" it's one of my favourite songs.
Click here to listen to another beautiful version of "Tupelo Honey", featuring Brian Kennedy on vocals.
After I had taken these pictures of Julia, it occurred to me that there's no reason why I shouldn't take pictures of people more often.

More new pictures coming soon... but I've got a hard week at work coming up... I'm gonna try to watch as many matches of Euro 2012 as possible... and last but not least, I'm once again searching for a new apartment.

Have a great week!

The Promised Land

The dogs on main street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in the promised land

(Bruce Springsteen - The Promised Land)

Good evening!

I'm back from my weekend getaway to Paderborn and Herford in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. There's a lot of beautiful, old houses and churches... I hope you enjoy what you see... I'll post more pictures of the architecture soon.

A Beggar On A Beach Of Gold

Oh lord I'm a poor man
With all the riches I can hold
I'm a beggar
And I'm sitting on a beach of gold

The problems I encountered
Gave me strength, helped me sustain
To know the pleasure
First I had to cure the pain

When I was searching for solutions
I found the answer lay in me
I'm a drifter
But I'm drifting on a silver sea

Silent Running

After I picked up the motor scooter (which is the one in this picture), I had a quick vegetarian lunch at Mustafa's in the Mehringdamm - area.

I spent seven hours exploring the city and visited many famous buildings and places. The iconic Café Moskau is one of them.

Another building I liked: The German Historical Museum.

One Tree Hill

And in the world a heart of darkness
A fire zone
Where poets speak their heart
Then bleed for it

And when it's raining
Raining hard
That's when the rain will
Break the heart

You're running with me
Don't touch the ground
We're the restless hearted
Not the chained and bound
The sky is burning
A sea of flame
